American Academy of Ophthalmology CEO Urges Ophthalmologists to Fight Efforts to Expand Optometric Practice

David W. Parke II, MD, CEO, executive vice president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told ophthalmologists to join together to fight the expansion of optometric practices at the American Society of Retina Specialists meeting, according to an OSN Supersite report.

The AAO has prevented 28 states from passing scope of practice bills since 1999. The bills allow optometrists to perform injections and some laser procedures, and Kentucky and Oklahoma are the only two states to have successfully passed bills. In order to prevent scope of practice legislation in other states, the AAO and subspecialty societies are sponsoring legislation that would block those efforts.
