California had the most new ASCs that Becker's reported on in 2023. 

Here is a state-by-state breakdown of the 116 new ASCs so far this year:

Alabama:

  1. Cullman Regional Medical Center begun the approval process to construct an ASC at Hartselle Health Park.
  2. Dothan, Ala.-based Southeast Health Medical Center opened a new ASC, the Southeast Health Surgery Clinic. 
  3. Cullman Regional Medical Center earned approval from the State Health Planning & Development Agency certificate of need review board for the construction of a new ASC at HartselleHealth Park.
  4. Hoover-based Medplex Outpatient Surgery Center earned approval from the state's certificate of need review board to relocate its existing facility and construct an ASC two miles away.
  5. Healthcare Resources purchased a campus in Hoover that it plans to convert into a center anchored by an ASC.

Arkansas:

  1. CARTI opened a 57,000-square-foot surgery center in Little Rock June 9. 

Arizona:

  1. Healthcare real estate developer Hammes broke ground on a 48,000-square-foot medical office building in Buckeye.
  2. Mesa -based Surgery Center Services of America has 12 new ASCs that have opened in the last six months or will open in the next six months.
  3. Northern Arizona Healthcare will open a new cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery clinic in Flagstaff.

California:

  1. Lestonnac Free Clinic, a nonprofit in Orange is opening a free outpatient surgery center for patients with a low income and no health insurance. 
  2. Covenant Physician Partners expanded its footprint in Southern California through a new merger with Los Angeles-based Wilshire Center for Ambulatory Surgery. 
  3. San Bernardino-based SAC Health purchased a former Wells Fargo regional headquarters for over $35 million, with plans to establish an ASC. 
  4. Rancho Mirage Hospital, part of Eisenhower Health, is investing $156 million into the construction of a four-story cardiology ASC.
  5. Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente is planning an expansion of its West Los Angeles Medical Center Campus that will add an ASC. 
  6. Sacramento-based Sutter Health completed construction of a 69,000-square-foot ambulatory care center and surgery center. 
  7. Consulting firm QK submitted a plan for a mixed-use project that includes a 22,525-square-foot ASC in Hanford.
  8. Ridgecrest Regional Hospital completed the certification to reopen an ASC formerly owned and operated by a now-defunct private physician group.
  9. Marina Del Ray -based DISC Surgery Center celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 3. 
  10. The Santa Clara planning commission approved a use permit for the addition of an ASC in an existing building in the area.

Colorado:

  1. Broomfield-based SCL Health broke ground on an 80,000-square-foot medical office building with an ASC in Aurora,   
  2. Broe Real Estate has plans to build a new ASC at Mineral Medical Center in Littleton. 
  3. Centura Health opened an ASC at its St. Anthony Hospital campus in Lakewood.  
  4. Valley View, an independent nonprofit health system, opened an orthopedic ASC in Basalt.
  5. Aurora-based UCHealth is set to spend around $119 million to expand its Highlands Ranch Hospital, which will include an ASC.  
  6. Durango-based Mercy Hospital broke ground on an ASC and medical office building on the hospital's campus.

Connecticut:

  1. Greenwich Hospital and Yale New Haven Children's Hospital held a ribbon-cutting for their new pediatric ASC.
  2. A topping-off ceremony was held for a new Enfield-based ASC, the S. Prestley and Helen Blake Ambulatory Care Center.

Florida:

  1. Jax Spine and Pain Centers and the University of Florida Health Jacksonville completed a 54,000-square-foot medical office building with an ASC. 
  2. Ground has been broken on a 7,764-square-foot hybrid ASC near HCA Florida's Osceola Hospital campus in Kissimmee.
  3. Melbourne-based Deuk Spine Institute is planning to open an ASC in Orlando.
  4. Pompano Beach-based South Florida Same Day Surgery Center has opened.
  5. AdventHealth broke ground on a medical office building with an ASC on its Daytona Beach campus.
  6. Boca Raton Regional Hospital unveiled a new medical arts pavilion featuring an ASC. 
  7. Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic is set to begin construction on its new spine and joint ASC.

Georgia:

  1. Lawrenceville-based Northside Hospital Gwinnett is expanding outpatient care in the region through the construction of several new medical office buildings and an ASC.
  2. Atlanta-based Northside Hospital opened a new medical center in Snellville in partnership with the Realty Trust Group.

Illinois:

  1. Advocate Health Care is constructing a 60,000-square-foot medical center inside of a shopping mall in Chicago that will include an ASC.

Indiana:

  1. Beacon Health System and Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center opened the Surgery Center of Granger to offer outpatient orthopedic surgery.
  2. Real estate developer NexCore Group broke ground on the new Westfield Ambulatory Surgery Center and Westfield Medical Office Building. 

Iowa:

  1. Steindler Orthopedic Clinic broke ground on a new practice location and ASC in North Liberty.

Louisiana:

  1. The Joint Replacement Center of Louisiana opened in Lake Charles on June 20.
  2. Lafayette-based Louisiana Orthopedic Specialists has a $16.2 million ASC in the works.

Maryland:

  1. Anderson Orthopedic Clinic is opening an orthopedic ASC in Oxon Hill.
  2. Adventist HealthCare opened an ASC at its National Harbor location.
  3. MedStar Medical Group, which is part of Columbia-based MedStar Health, plans to open an ASC. 

Massachusetts:

  1. New England Baptist Hospital partnered with Constitution Surgery Alliance and 15 orthopedic surgeons to convert its surgical facility in Dedham to an ASC.

Michigan:

  1. Mount Clemens-based McLaren Macomb is set to open a medical office building with an ASC
  2. .Kalamazoo-based Bronson Healthcare held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new orthopedic surgery center.

Minnesota:

  1. Inspired Spine SurgCenter opened an ASC with an AI program in Burnsville.
  2. Duluth-based St. Luke's partnered with Moose Lake-based Gateway Family Health Clinic to open a new surgery center.
  3. Rochester -based Olmsted Medical Center broke ground on a new ASC in Owatonna,  
  4. HealthPartners broke ground on a $50.5 million specialty surgery center in Woodbury.  

Mississippi:

  1. A certificate-of-need has been submitted to the Mississippi State Department of Health for the establishment of a new ASC in Madison.
  2. The Oxford Surgery Center has broken ground on a 4,620-square-foot expansion.

Missouri:

  1. Cape Girardeau -based SoutheastHealth plans to build a $20 million ASC at its new Southeast Center for Integrated Health Services. 
  2. Jefferson City,-based Capital Region Medical Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new ASC. 
  3. The previously shuttered Fulton-based Callaway Community Hospital plans to reopen with an ASC. 
  4. Hammes, a healthcare-focused developer, and HCA Midwest Health broke ground on a new ASC in Lee's Summit.

Montana:

  1. Intermountain Health and Ortho Montana broke ground on the Gallatin Valley Surgery Center in Bozeman.

Nebraska:

  1. Omaha, Neb.-based Children's Hospital and Medical Center is set to begin construction on a 60,000-square-foot pediatric outpatient center.

Nevada:

  1. Comprehensive Surgical Care held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its newest ASC in Reno.
  2. Crovetti Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine opened a second location with an ASC in Las Vegas. 

New Hampshire:

  1. A new surgery center was approved for development at Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth.

New Jersey:

  1. Muhlenberg Ambulatory Surgery Center in Plainfield opened at the site of the former Muhlenberg Hospital.
  2. Summit Health opened its third ASC focused on urology in New Jersey, the Center for Advanced Surgical Excellence. 
  3. Cooper University Health Care unveiled its $150 million ambulatory care center located inside of a former Sears department store in Moorestown. 
  4. AtlantiCare proposed to build a medical office building with an ASC in Stafford Township. 
  5. Compass Surgical Partners and Jersey Shore ASC partnered to manage an ASC in Somers Point.

New Mexico:

  1. Physician-owned specialty group Nexus Health broke ground on a three-story, 95,000-square-foot outpatient specialty medical office building in Santa Fe. 

New York:

  1. The University of Rochester Medicine Center for Orthopaedics and Physical Performance Surgery Center in Henrietta opened.
  2. NYU Langone Health is moving forward on construction of an ASC inside of a former Burlington Coat Factory in Patchogue.  
  3. New York City-based NYU Langone Health opened the Joseph S. and Diane H. Steinberg Ambulatory Care Center. 
  4. A medical office building with an ASC in Utica has secured $25.3 million in construction financing to begin the project. 
  5. New York City-based Jamaica Hospital Medical Center began construction on an ASC. 
  6. Catholic Health opened an ambulatory and urgent care center in Centereach.

North Carolina:

  1. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., was granted conditional approval from the state to build an ASC. 

Ohio:

  1. University Hospitals is adding an ASC at its Beachwood location as part of a $236 million expansion project.
  2. OhioHealth is expanding its OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in downtown Columbus through the construction of a new ASC. 
  3. A specialized surgery center is part of a $23.3 million medical campus planned in Liberty Township.

Oregon:

  1. The Orthopedic Outpatient Center is opening a 30,815-square-foot ASC and physical therapy suite in Medford.

Pennsylvania:

  1. Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital will open the Geisinger Surgery Center-Highland Park in Mifflin County.
  2. WellSpan Health is building a 34,000-square-foot ASC in Lancaster.
  3. WellSpan Health plans to construct an ASC and medical office building in the state's South Middleton Township.

South Carolina:

  1. Southern Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy Physicians is building a 21,000-square-foot flagship facility that includes an ASC in Columbia.
  2. McLeod Health is starting construction this fall on a $15.3 million ASC with four operating rooms and two procedural rooms in Carolina Forest.

Tennessee

  1. Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics announced the opening of its new 37,992-square-foot surgery center located in Chattanooga.
  2. Pain Consultants of East Tennessee opened a new 27,000-square-foot facility in Knoxville with a certified ASC. 
  3. Nashville, Tenn.-based Ascension Saint Thomas is opening an ASC in partnership with United Surgical Partners International and Tennessee Orthopedic Alliance.
  4. Murfreesboro Medical Clinic & SurgiCenter plans to open a new, 75,000-square-foot facility at the end of the month.
  5. Two of the largest hospital systems in Chattanooga partnered to build a $23.2 million ASC. 

Texas:

  1. National Spine & Pain Centers opened Dallas-based National Spine & Ortho in March.
  2. Baylor Scott & White Health has broken ground on a new ASC on its campus in College Station.
  3. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic plans to renovate and expand its Houston-based Cypress Clinic, adding a second 120,000-square-foot professional building with space for an ASC.
  4. Texas Digestive Disease Consultants and Cedar Park Regional Medical Center broke ground on a joint partnership multispecialty ASC, the Pflugerville Surgery Center. 
  5. Ground has been broken on a three-story medical office building and ASC project in Katy.
  6. Ascension Medical Group opened Ascension Medical Group Georgetown Health Center in Georgetown on Aug. 21. 
  7. The board of trustees at Houston,-based Texas County Memorial Hospital has approved a construction contract to build a $3.3 million ASC.

Utah: 

  1. Intermountain Health opened its seventh ASC in the state with a location in Murray.
  2. St. George Surgical Center is opening a state-of-the-art, 13,000-square-foot ASC with four operating rooms. 
  3. The Metrodora Institute, a multidisciplinary medical and research center with an ASC has opened in Salt Lake City. 
  4. Intermountain Healthcare broke ground on an ASC in Layton.
  5. Intermountain opened an orthopedic-focused ASC in Park City.
  6. Intermountain Health is opening a new medical campus with an ASC in Saratoga Springs.

Vermont:

  1. The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington submitted a certificate of need to the Green Mountain Care Board for a multispecialty ASC that would cost $130 million.

Virginia:

  1. Fishersville-based Augusta Health held a ribbon cutting for its new 60,000-square-foot Augusta Health Outpatient Pavilion. 
  2. Bon Secours is planning to expand its St. Francis Medical Center campus in Midlothian by adding an ASC.

Washington:

  1. Optum Health affiliate Everett Clinic opened a 39,500-square-foot facility with 50 exam rooms and an ASC in Arlington.
  2. PeaceHealth plans to build a new ASC in Bellingham.
  3. Mount Vernon, Wash.-based Skagit Regional Health is planning to open a new ASC. 

Wisconsin:

  1. Western Wisconsin is gaining its first multispecialty ASC, the Valley Surgery Center, which had a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 12.
  2. SSM Health plans to build an ASC that would replace a standalone emergency room in Sun Prairie.
  3. Construction is set to begin on an independent, surgeon-led ASC in Jamestown.
  4. The $50 million, 160,000-square-foot Hudson Medical Center, which features an ASC, opened its doors to patients.
  5. OrthoMidwest opened a surgery center in Beloit.
  6. Tower Clock Eye Center, based in Green Bay plans to open an ASC specializing in cataract, glaucoma and cornea surgeries. 
  7. Madison-based Orthopedic and Spine Centers of Wisconsin plans to open a surgery center by November 2024.
