How an outpatient surgery center helped Williston Medical Center handle volume spike — 4 insights

The 25-bed Mercy Medical Center in Williston, N.D., built an ambulatory surgery and birthing center to accommodate a dramatic increase in patient volume, according to Davis Partnership Architects.

Here's what you should know:

1. Mercy Medical Center, which now operates as CHI St. Alexius Health - Williston Medical Center, saw patient volume spike because of the North Dakota oil boom.

2. The health system built the two-story, 40,000-square-foot BirthPlace at Williston and Outpatient Surgery Center to meet demand. It features four operating rooms, eight labor, delivery and recovery rooms, eight 23-hour stay rooms and two gastroenterology suites.

3. The freestanding center was completed in 15 months on an aggressive, fast-track construction schedule.

4. The facility was a finalist in the 51st Annual PCI Design Awards for outstanding use of precast concrete.
