Staying ahead of the curve: 3 ASC firsts

Here are three ambulatory surgery centers that were the first in their region or state to begin using new techniques or technology.

CMMP Surgical Center (Jefferson City, Mo.). The surgery center is the only provider in Jefferson City utilizing the following techniques or technology for treating glaucoma ExPress Mini Shunt, SLT Laser Therapy and iStent. The center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and it offers surgical services in a wide array of specialties, including ENT, oral surgery, gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, medical oncology and urology. It is managed by Symbion.
 
Eye Surgery and Laser Center (Winter Haven, Fla.). The surgery was one of the first centers in Florida to acquire the femto second laser assisted cataract surgery using the Catalyst femto second laser unit in August 2013, according to Eileen Beltramba, RN, the center's director. The center is Medicare-approved and accredited by the Accredited Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It offers a wide array of procedures including cataract with lens implant, glaucoma surgery, retina surgery and corneal transplants. More than 15 physicians provide care at the center's locations in Winter Haven and Sebring, Fla.

Ortho Northeast SurgeryONE (Fort Wayne, Ind.). The freestanding surgery center was the first healthcare project in the Fort Wayne region to be designated a LEED Silver Certified facility by the U.S. Green Building Council. The center offers outpatient procedures to nearly 5,000 patients each year and it is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care. Common procedures performed at the center include anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release as well as surgical correction of foot and ankle deformities. The medical team at the surgery center includes seven physicians.
