As Women's History month comes to a close, Surgical Care Affiliates is celebrating the completion of a successful all-women medical mission trip to Honduras supporting One World Surgery.
One World Surgery funds and operates a surgery center, located on the ranch of Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos, a home for 500 abandoned and disadvantaged children. In 2018, One World Surgery hosted 22 medical mission trips where surgeons performed 1,102 procedures, including 182 joint replacements. The medical professionals also held 7,217 consults during those trips and 13 education sessions. In total, 717 volunteers traveled to Honduras as part of the mission last year and the organization raised more than $2.9 million.
During the most recent trip in early March, more than 30 women across the SCA network participated in the trip, focused on women supporting women. In addition to providing medical care, the women on this trip facilitated leadership and empowerment workshops with local women and girls in Honduras and hosted a donation drive.
During the trip, the all-women brigade was able to provide surgery for 37 people, 75 percent of which were women. One World Surgery has 20 more planned missions this year where clinicians and volunteers will provide life-saving medical care and support for a community in need.
