Physician owners vs. nonowners: Who earns more?

Physician owners outearned their counterparts in 2023, but the gap between the two shrunk compared to the previous year, according to Medical Economics' 2024 "Physician Report," published Aug. 14. 

Medical Economics collected data from its physician audience on salaries, productivity, malpractice rates and the state of the profession. Data covers 2023 and was collected from physicians who responded to email invitations during the first and second quarters of 2024.

Here is how the average income of physician owners and non-owners has changed since 2018:

Nonowner: $283,000

2022

Owner: $290,000

Nonowner: $260,500

2021

Owner: $289,000

Nonowner: $252,000

2020

Owner: $276,000

Nonowner: $265,000

2019

Owner: $289,000

Nonowner: $258,000

Owner: $315,000

Nonowner: $248,000
