John Jarstad, OD, took a medical mission trip to Ecuador in November 2018, the Columbia Missourian reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. Dr. Jarstad served aboard the U.S. Navy's USNS Comfort, a large hospital ship.
2. On the trip, Dr. Jarstad operated on Carlos Ramos, who could only see light and dark. Now Mr. Ramos has "almost perfect 20/20 vision."
3. The medical mission trips typically last 10 days where the team aboard performs around 100 procedures.
4. Dr. Jarstad has taken several other mission trips, including a trip to North Korea where he played billiards with Kim Jong Un.
