Charleston, W.Va.-based gastroenterologist Steven Matulis, MD, was sentenced to up to five years in prison and must pay a $10,000 fine after he was convicted of sexually abusing several patients, the Charleston Gazette-Mail reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. Dr. Matulis is also subject to five years of supervision once he leaves prison.
2. He was convicted of inappropriately touching patients while they were under anesthesia. He has several civil lawsuits still pending related to the abuse.
3. Several of Dr. Matulis' former staff members accused him of touching patients inappropriately.
4. Dr. Matulis' lawyers argued for a new trial on the grounds his actions weren't done for "sexual gratification." The judge denied their motion.
5. When sentencing Dr. Matulis, the judge said his actions affected multiple people and the entire community.
