Viking Systems' 3DHD Visualization System Demonstrated at the 12th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery

Westborough, Mass.-based Viking Systems' 3DHD prototype visualization system, displayed on a Sony prototype medical grade 3DHD monitor, was demonstrated for attendees of the 12th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery held in National Harbor, Md., last week, according to a Viking Systems news release.

The surgery displayed at the Congress was performed on the gallbladder of an adult pig using Viking Systems' "Next Generation" 3DHD System, with the output displayed on a Sony prototype medical grade, 24-inch 3DHD monitor and recorded on Sony's new SRW-5800 3D-capable recorder.

Eric J. DeMaria, MD, the physician performing the system, said in a separate release by Sony, "Using 3D cameras in the OR has changed my sense of depth and space while performing minimally invasive surgery. In our recent tests, Sony's technology has helped provide a truer visual experience — similar to that of natural sight, even when performing laparoscopic surgical tasks deep within the abdominal cavity."

Viking Systems plans to launch its "Next Generation" 3DHD System in the fourth quarter of 2010.
