UNC researchers develop diagnostic criteria for GI disorders — 5 points

William E. Whitehead, PhD, and several other Chapel Hill-based University of North Carolina School of Medicine researchers, updated the diagnostic criteria used for functional gastrointestinal disorders published in the Rome Foundation’s Rome IV, Science Daily reports.

Here are five points:

1. The other researchers include:

  • Miranda van Tilburg, PhD
  • Douglas Drossman, MD
  • Olafur Palsson, PsyD

2. The Rome Foundation is a nonprofit organization supporting people suffering from functional GI disorders.

3. Rome IV, published 10 years after Rome III, incorporates the amended guidelines Dr. Whitehead and his team proposed.

4. Irritable bowel syndrome is one GI disorder that underwent diagnostic changes. Currently, IBS affects an estimated six percent of the U.S. population. Before Rome IV’s publication, however, IBS was believed to affect an estimated 11 percent of the U.S. population.

5. Disorders published for the first time in Rome IV include functional nausea and functional vomiting for pediatrics, and cannabinoid-induced nausea and opiate-induced constipation for adults.
