Gastroenterologist Suresh Chari, MD, received a $500,000 grant from The Sandler-Kenner Foundation, an Irving, Calif.-based organization backing pancreatic cancer research, according to a Dallas/Fort Worth Healthcare Daily report. Dr. Chari practices at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He serves on the foundation's scientific advisory board and will put the grant toward pancreatic cancer early detection strategies in patients older than 50 who have new-onset diabetes.
His research will consist of analyzing the Mayo Clinic's database of 150,000 patients and performing lab tests and ultrasounds on patients with high blood glucose. Dr. Chari will draw upon more than 15 years of research looking at the link between diabetes and pancreatic cancer.
