Fort Myers, Fla.-based Riverwalk Endoscopy and Surgery Center gastroenterologist Asif Choudhury, MD, allegedly sexually assaulted two women while conducting colonoscopies, the News-Press reports.
Here's what you should know.
1. Dr. Choudhury faces three counts of felony sexual battery.
2. The colonoscopies and subsequent assaults were allegedly performed on June 15, 2017.
3. The center is also named as a co-defendant in the suit. The plaintiffs claim Dr. Choudhury was allowed to use the facility despite center staff allegedly knowing of Dr. Choudhury's "harmful propensities."
4. A center worker claimed to have seen Dr. Choudhury commit similar acts of sexual assault at least 10 to 15 times.
5. The employee who witnessed the assaults allegedly told other employees about it, but the assaults were never reported to authorities, according to the suit.
6. Dr. Choudhury holds a 33 percent ownership stake in the center.
7. His business partners were not named in the suit.
8. The Florida Department of Health stripped Dr. Choudhury of his rights to practice medicine, while investigators look into the allegations.
9. Dr. Choudhury was accused of assaulting another woman undergoing a colonoscopy at Fort Myers-based HealthPark Medical Center in May 2017. No suit was filed in connection with that case.
10. Dr. Choudhury claimed his actions were misinterpreted and were allegedly part of a normal examination, however experts disagree with that claim.
