Study: Propofol Sedation for Colonoscopy Not Worth High Cost

A recent survey looked at general anesthesia use for colonoscopy and found most medical professionals would prefer full sedation for the procedure but the cost can be prohibitive, according a Reuters Health report.
Don Rockey, MD, of Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and Deepak Agrawal, MD, of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, asked medical professionals questions about the type of anesthesia they would prefer during a colonoscopy screening and how much extra they would be willing to pay for anesthesia. Four hundred and fifty-one gastroenterologists and 460 nurses were polled.

While most respondents said they would prefer propofol deep sedation, they were unwilling to pay more than $200 for it. Propofol sedation can run patients an additional $600 to $2,000 dollars, according to the study.
