Researchers have developed an obesity-based health index that more accurately predicted mortality in a study, according to a CMAJ report.
Going beyond traditional measures of obesity like the body mass index, which focuses on excess adiposity, the Edmonton obesity staging system also looks at functional status and underlying comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia.
While the body mass index has been useful for classifying adiposity at the population level, it has limited applicability in assessing individual risk.
