A new study shows that bariatric surgery can lead to significant bone loss, according to a report by Internal Medical News.
The still unpublished Mayo Clinic study suggested that bone loss a year after a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass can be equivalent to bone loss in the first five years of menopause for some women.
A retrospective chart study of patients undergoing the surgery found 138 fractures in 82 patients, with a standardized incidence ratio of 2.1 for any fracture and 1.9 for fractures of the hip, spine, wrist or arm.
