Real-time quality improvement systems improved adenoma detection rate and technical skills of providers during colonoscopy, Medpage Today reports.
Chinese researchers examined the effect artificial intelligence systems had on colonoscopy detection in a study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology. Researchers compared detection rate differences between 355 system-assisted colonoscopies and 349 unassisted control colonoscopies.
What you should know:
1. Fifty-eight of 355 patients in the system-assisted group had at least one adenoma detected, compared to 27 of 349 patients in the control colonoscopy.
2. The system-assisted group detected 10 adenomas that were 10 millimeters or larger, compared to the control group's one.
3. The AI system also noted colonoscope withdrawal speed and time, alerted the endoscopist to blind spots during the procedure and live-tracked previous framed captured during the procedure.
4. The research team believes the AI system "could be a powerful assistant for mitigating skill variations among endoscopists and improving the quality of everyday colonoscopy."
5. Researchers studied the Endoangel AI-powered system. The system improves on past AI-ADR systems by broadening the scope of visualization
