GI/endoscopy procedures, such as colonoscopy, represent a high case volume at ambulatory surgery centers. In a recent study published in the journal Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, researchers compared conventional polypectomy with cold snare polypectomy for small colorectal polyps in anticoagulated patients.
The researchers found:
• Immediate bleeding during the procedure occurred in 23 percent of the conventional snare group
• Immediate bleeding during the procedure occurred in 5.7 percent of the cold snare group
• 14 percent of patients in the conventional snare group experienced delayed bleeding and required endoscopic hemostasis
• None of patients in the cold snare group experienced delayed bleeding
• Complete polyp retrieval rates were the same in both groups
The researchers concluded that cold snare polypectomy is preferred for small colorectal polyp removal in anticoagulated patients.
