Adnan Altaf, MD, performed the first "awake endoscopy" procedure in Oklahoma on Logan Marshall, 12, to examine his esophagus, local news affiliate Oklahoma's News 4 reports.
What you should know:
1. Marshall has eosinophilic esophagitis. He undergoes regular endoscopies to see which foods cause esophageal damage.
2. He previously underwent traditional endoscopies, which required aesthesia and had lengthy recovery periods.
3. Dr. Altaf performed an awake endoscopy at Oklahoma City-based OU Children’s to eliminate the need for anesthesia and to shorten the length of the procedure.
4. Marshall said he'd be willing to undergo the procedure again. He said the scope was like "a long, skinny finger picking my nose."
