New York GI practice's medical records found tossed with trash — 5 insights

NBC affiliate 4 New York's investigative team found patient files for Jonathan Warman, MD, and Alexander Chun, MD, outside with the trash.

What you should know:

1. The investigative team found patient health records and sensitive information in the trash outside of a medical office building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. While the building has several offices, the records were all from Drs. Warman and Chun.

2. The records included health information, names and Social Security numbers. The files also had pictures taken during colonoscopies.

3. Dr. Warman said the duo had recently switched offices and left the files next to the bin for paper to be shredded. He believes the cleaning staff inadvertently took the files, thinking they were trash.

4. An attorney for the physicians denied that either physician attempted to improperly dispose of the protected health information.

5. The physicians requested the news station return the files, so they could be disposed of properly.
