A growing number of women are having bariatric surgery to boost their fertility, according to a report by the New York Daily News.
One Manhattan bariatric surgeon said 15 percent of his female patients are choosing the procedure to help them get pregnant. A New Jersey woman who had been trying to have a baby for eight years had bariatric surgery in 2008, lost 170 pounds, delivered a son in 2009 and is pregnant again.
Obesity can cause infertility when extra fat cells disrupt the balance of hormones needed to get pregnant. In addition, very overweight women are prone to polycystic ovarian syndrome, which makes it difficult to ovulate and conceive.
