University Physicians & Surgeons, part of the clinical arm of the University of California, Irvine, has announced the appointment of gastroenterologist William Karnes, MD, as associate clinical professor in the division of gastroenterology, according to a news release.
He most recently worked at a private practice in Santa Barbara, Calif., and held a clinical assistant professorship at the University of Southern California.
Dr. Karnes specializes in disease of the gastrointestinal tract, including inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome and colorectal cancer. His research interests include proliferative and apoptotic signal transduction in colon carcinogenesis, novel molecular markers or risk and targets of therapy in colon cancer.
Dr. Karnes received his MD from and fulfilled an internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at UCLA and a research fellowship in molecular biology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
