Kevin M. Behrle, MD, gastroenterologist and medical director of outpatient surgery at the Toledo (Ohio) Clinic, has written a column on the importance of colorectal screening for the Toledo Blade.
In the article, Dr. Behrle discusses why early detection on colorectal cancer is important for reducing the number of deaths associated with colorectal cancer, who should receive screening colonoscopies, when the procedure is typically covered by Medicare and insurance companies, how colonoscopies are performed and why they are considered the "gold standard" of screening tests.
He also lobbies for Ohio to mandate colorectal cancer screening as a required covered service for commercial and private health insurance companies. It is one of 21 states that have not legislated coverage of colorectal cancer screening by commercial and private health insurance companies.
Dr. Behrle is board certified in GI and internal medicine, according to his Toledo Clinic profile. He received his MD from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, and performed his internship/residency and fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
