The Abbott Real Time HCV Genotype II test, the first genotyping test for hepatitis C patients, has received FDA approval, according to a Medscape report.
The test, created by Des Plaines, Ill.-based Abbott Molecular, is designed to distinguish between the hepatitis C virus genotypes 1, 1a, 1b, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The test is expected to help improve patient outcomes by helping physicians to indentify the type of hepatitis C a patient has and choose the appropriate drug therapy.
