Endoscopy Safe and Effective for Large Colonic Polyps

Researchers found large colonic polyps, which are traditionally managed surgically, can be safely and effective managed by endoscopy, according to a study published in Gastroenterology.

The study involved 479 patients who were referred for endoscopic mucosal resection of colorectal polyps that were greater than or equal to 20 mm in size. Researchers collected data on lesion profiles and outcomes. Results showed endoscopic mucosal resection was effective at completely removing large polyps in a single procedure for 89.2 percent of patients. No patient died from the resection, and 83.7 percent of patients were able to avoid surgery.

Researchers also found lack of effectiveness could be associated with a prior attempt at endoscopic mucosal resection, and independent predictors of recurrence after endoscopic mucosal resection were lesions greater than 40 mm and use of argon plasma coagulation.
