Eliminating Dietary Gluten May Decrease Chance of Developing Type 1 Diabetes

Researchers from the Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic may have discovered a link between Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease, according to a WPR report.

Scientists have long thought a connection might exist between the two diseases, both of which stem from immune system reactions. In a series of tests conducted on mice, researchers observed the risk of diabetes dropping significantly after mice were put on a gluten-free diet.

The findings will not help people already diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes but could reduce the risk for those in danger of developing the disease.

Eventually, the team, led by gastroenterologist Joseph Murray, MD, plans to study the effects in humans.
