Bariatric surgery should be considered earlier for eligible patients to help curb the complications of type 2 diabetes, according to an International Diabetes Federation news release.
An IDF position paper said the health of obese people with type 2 diabetes can substantially benefit from bariatric surgery under certain circumstances, including glucose control and other obesity-related comorbid conditions.
Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases, with almost 300 million people affected worldwide and 450 million people forecast to have it by 2030.
