The colorectal surgical site infection rate decreased 61.7 percent in Hawaiian hospitals participating in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Safety Program for Surgery, according to an article in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Here are four things to know.
1. The pre-post cohort study included all 15 Hawaiian hospitals between 2013 and 2015.
2. The most common interventions included:
- Reliable chlorhexidine wash/wipe during surgical prep.
- Appropriate antibiotic choice, dose, and/or timing.
- Standardized postsurgical debriefing.
- Differentiating clean-dirty-clean with anastomosis tray.
3. Between 2013 and 2015, the collaborative colorectal SSI rate decreased from 12.08 percent to 4.63 percent.
4. According to the study authors, reduction rate is the greatest reported state-level reduction.
