Philip S. Schoenfield, MD, MSEd, MSc, professor and director of University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Gastrointestinal and Epidemiology Training Program, discussed the CMS requirements for reaching quality benchmarks at an American College of Gastroenterology symposium, according to a Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News report.
Under the Affordable Care Act, CMS will require gastroenterologists to document cecal intubation rate during colonoscopies. A higher than 95 percent cecal intubation rate is the current quality benchmark. Other quality benchmark report requirements are possible.
Gastroenterologists performing endoscopy procedures are currently receiving a 2 percent bonus for documentation and reporting of quality indication. By 2014, gastroenterologists failing to report these indications will be penalized 1.5 percent of reimbursement fees.
