• Gastroenterology is the third highest earning specialty, behind orthopedics ($421,000) and cardiology ($376,000).
• Gastroenterologist compensation was up 7 percent in 2014 when compared to the prior year.
• Self-employed female gastroenterologists earn more than their male peers. Self-employed female GI physicians earn $434,000, while self-employed male GI physicians earn $419,000.
• Employed male gastroenterologists earn $321,000, while employed female gastroenterologists earn $292,000.
• Less than half of self-employed gastroenterologists (39 percent) are satisfied with their income. On the other hand, 52 percent of employed gastroenterologists feel fairly compensated.
