The recent certification maintenance process changes for physician assistants are modeled after the ABMS model and should be embraced, Wanda Gonsalves, MD, wrote in an editorial in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
While in many ways the new NCCPA process is simpler than most being implemented by physician boards, it touches on the same concepts of professionalism, self-assessment and lifelong learning, she said.
"Yes, the new requirements include new types of activities that I have to complete," Dr. Gonsalves wrote. "And yes, it's a little more to keep up with. But the new self-assessment modules and the 'performance in practice' modules we're completing are meant to refresh our medical knowledge as well as to improve overall patient care by performing continuous quality improvements in our own practices."
