Most patients want to manage their healthcare needs online while preserving face-to-face interactions with physicians, according to a new survey by Accenture.
The survey of 1,100 U.S. patients found that most (90 percent) want to use technology to access medical information, refill prescriptions and book physician appointments. Nearly half of those surveyed (48 percent) want their physicians to manage their medical records, while 44 percent prefer to manage their own information.
The survey also found that patients want increasingly digital interactions with their physicians but do not necessarily want to sacrifice time spent in the physician's office. The majority of patients (88 percent) want to receive email reminders when it is time for an appointment and 76 percent want the option of email consultations, but 85 percent want to preserve in-person interactions with physicians when needed.
"Patients increasingly want access to their personal medical information, anytime, anywhere," said Kaveh Safavi, MD, JD, who leads Accenture's North America health industry group. "But they're not willing to give up the option of face time with their physicians."
