3 Points on Choosing a Health Information Exchange

An American Medical News report highlighted three factors that a physician practice should consider when choosing a health information exchange:

  • How will the system make the practice more efficient? An HIE should address self-identified "pain points" in the practice, such as time spent getting lab results or making referrals.
  • Does the HIE encompass the right geographic area? Depending on the practice's location and scope, an ideal HIE may encompass patients statewide or cross state lines.
  • Is the HIE sustainable? Practices should be aware of ongoing expenses associated with the system, such as per-transaction fees and monthly or yearly membership fees, to ensure that the HIE is compatible with the budget long-term.
