With the shift to surgeries in lower-cost outpatient settings, the number of procedures performed in ASCs is expected to rise, according to a report from the Health Industry Distributors Association.
Three details from the report:
1. Commercial payers comprised 64 percent of ASC payer mix in 2017, with Medicare following at 19 percent.
2. Over half of outpatient surgeries were performed in ASCs in 2017, up 32 percent from 2005. Outpatient volumes are expected to increase 14 percent to 16 percent through 2026.
3. Seventy percent of the more than 6,000 ASCs in the U.S. are independently owned, and other industry groups have 20 percent of the market share.
