Myra Eleby-Hankerson, RN, MSN, is administrator of Midtown Surgery Center in New York City. Here, she discusses her biggest staffing roadblocks and key thoughts to build a positive culture.
Question: What has been your biggest staffing challenge and how do you overcome it?
Myra Eleby-Hankerson: Hiring experience registered nurses. We have not overcome it yet, but I have tasked my physicians to assist in recruiting.
Q: What is your philosophy on building and maintaining a positive culture at the ASC?
MEH: You must be trustworthy. Even in a toxic environment, the staff must know that you are available, judgment free and fair across the board.
Q: What tips do you have for new administrators managing an ASC team for the first time?
MEH: Do not make changes to any of your departments immediately, unless it jeopardizes patient safety. Just observe and follow your staff around. Ask plenty of questions in particular 'why.' Remember be judgment free.
Q: How have you challenged your team to grow in 2019?
MEH: To watch each other's back. Question everything. Be that patient's advocate! Speak up!
