Despite a 61 percent increase in outpatient surgical volume, Massena (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital posted a $1.4 million loss, North Country Now reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The hospital's increased outpatient caseload could not offset the dropping inpatient volumes.

2. Concerning the hospital's booming outpatient clinical segment, Massena Memorial had a 58 percent increase in visits from June 2017 to June 2018. Between 2017 and 2018, the hospital has experienced a 61 percent increase in caseload.

3. The hospital planned for the increased outpatient caseload but did not anticipate the decreased inpatient caseload. The hospital had only 122 inpatients in June, which was 37 percent lower than what they had planned for.
