Savannah, Ga.-based Optim Surgery Center's Donald McCartney, MD, provided free surgery and physical therapy to two young Guatemalan siblings, WSAV3 reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. The surgery center is required to perform a certain number of indigent care or charity cases, according to Dr. McCartney. Dr. McCartney treated the two siblings' idiopathic scoliosis to help the center reach its percentage requirements.
2. The patients were a 15-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl with idiopathic scoliosis. The 11-year-old traveled to the U.S. for the operation and will undergo outpatient therapy in Savannah.
3. Dr. McCartney has traveled to Guatemala to treat children with severe scoliosis for a decade.
