Rochester, N.Y.-based Surgery Center at Sawgrass nurses Patricia McLanahan, Kristen Kelly and Nadia Tillet use toys to make young patients feel more comfortable when coming to the ASC for surgery, WHAM reported.
Here are the key details to know:
1. The toys come from the Pirate Toy Fund, which provides about 200 toys to the center every six weeks.
2. The Surgery Center at Sawgrass also hosts an annual toy collection drive for the Pirate Toy Fund.
3. Children coming to the center get to choose one toy before going into surgery, which helps the patients feel more at home, Ms. Kelly said.
“And they're always waking up from surgery, looking around for their toy,” Ms. Tillett told WHAM. "And I think that kind of helps them, they feel they're playing a role in their day because it's unexpected."
