FDA commissioner urges industry to improve information sharing practices: 5 takeaways

FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, MD, emphasized the importance of information sharing in the healthcare industry at the American Heart Association's Scientific Session on Nov. 13, 2016, according to EMS World.

Here are five takeaways:

1. He noted that lack of technology served as a barrier to information sharing back when he first started practicing, but today, "the limiting factor of progress is us," according to EMS World.

2. Dr. Califf said few clinical guidelines arose from solid evidence.

3. He urged the industry to focus on developing better evidence and leveraging it to enhance clinical practice, breaking down the divide between collecting evidence and practice.

4. Since healthcare systems now utilize EHRs, distributing and analyzing data among providers proves much simpler.

5. Dr. Califf said the industry must adopt a "cultural and ethical principle" that encourages information sharing, according to EMS World.
