4 ways facilities can stifle physician burnout

Physician burnout has countless indirect costs to facilities such as decreased patient satisfaction, medical errors and inefficiency, according to MD Magazine.

A burned out physician can impact an entire facility's revenue, so faculties should prioritize stifling burnout to ensure their facility withstands the evolving healthcare landscape.

Christopher Burton, MD, provides four ways for facilities to reduce burnout.

1. Understand the root of burnout, at the organizational level. If administrative tasks impede a physician's ability to provide quality care, administrators should seek ways to limit burnout's cause.

2. Allow your physicians to be decision-makers in the practice. This will allow physicians to influence how they practice medicine.

3. Prioritize physician well-being. Implement various programs that work to ensure your physician health is a priority.

4. Employ a professional coach. Administrators may need to hire a coach who understands physicians' problems, and can work directly with them to devise ways to improve efficiency and decrease burnout.
