UPMC partners with ophthalmology surgery center to acquire Irish hospital — 4 insights

UPMC and the Institute of Eye Surgery partnered to acquire Clane General Hospital in Kildare, Ireland, laying the foundation of what will soon be a national Ophthalmology Network of Excellence, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

What you should know:

1. Pittsburgh-based UPMC and Waterford, Ireland-based Institute of Eye Surgery plan to make the hospital part of a larger effort to expand ophthalmology care in the country.

2. Clane General will be rebranded as UPMC Kildare Hospital.

3. This is UPMC's second hospital in Ireland. UPMC acquired a hospital in Waterford in 2018. UPMC first expanded into Ireland when it opened a cancer treatment center in Waterford in 2006.

4. None of the entities involved in the deal disclosed financial terms.
