UnitedHealth Group ramping up Texas presence: 5 details

The urgent-care division of Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group is opening new facilities in Texas, further expanding UnitedHealth's presence in the state, the StarTribune reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. MedExpress will open two new urgent-care centers in Fort Worth, Texas, and Arlington, Texas, within the next couple weeks. It plans to open a third in Irving, Texas, by October.

2. MedExpress is part of UnitedHealth's Optum division, which also operates two large medical groups in Texas. In 2017, Optum acquired Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates, which had around 20 surgery centers in the state.

3. MedExpress already has 11 centers in Texas.

4. UnitedHealth Group has a majority ownership interest in San Antonio-based WellMed. In 2016, WellMed acquired a Texas-based medical group that's now part of OptumCare.

5. UnitedHealth Group's long-term goal for Optum is to build care delivery operations in 75 target markets, CEO David Wichmann said at an investor conference in May.

"MedExpress is locating in Texas to bring our model of care to more patients and further support the Optum delivery network in that state," the company said in a statement to the StarTribune.
