Kenny Spitler has joined ASC management and development company Interventional Management Services as its chief development officer.
Mr. Spitler comes to IMS after serving as senior vice president – development for HealthMark Partners for the past four years. In his role as CDO for IMS, he will oversee all development activities for the company, including syndications and acquisitions.
"I'm responsible for everything and anything to do with growing business and adding new centers to our portfolio," Mr. Spitler says. He is also responsible for all sales, marketing and promotions for the company.
IMS is led Robin J. Fowler, MD, chairman and medical director, who created the company with CEO Stephen Rosenbaum. The company currently has six ASC partners — four in Georgia, one in Florida and one in New Mexico — and has an aggressive growth plan for the future which led to the hiring of Mr. Spitler, says Mr. Rosenbaum.
"While IMS has enjoyed some solid growth over the last two years, we've evolved to the level which would require a chief development officer of Kenny's caliber," he says. "Interventional Management Services is moving to a larger overall scale. Kenny has a good history of success in the ASC industry and we're fortunate to have him as part of our team."
Mr. Spitler says the goal for IMS is to bring on a minimum of four new ASC partners in 2011. Their interests range from minority or majority equity position, turnaround opportunities, management roles and would consider de novo projects. IMS is looking for ASCs with growth potential regardless of size or location.
"We don't have any boundaries," Mr. Spitler says. "We have a really robust war chest of capital so I'm able to go out, do deals and cut checks today. This company has been very prudent financially, so everything is done with cash-on-hand.
"Our philosophy is going to be to get deals done quickly instead of dragging the due diligence process over a period of months," he says. "If it makes sense and is beneficial for both parties, we're going to be able to close quickly. I'd like to see us get all of our transactions completed within 90 days from the time we first meet someone to when we close."
IMS places a heavy emphasis on physician control with its ASC partners, which is reflective of Dr. Fowler's role as medical director of the company. IMS structures deals with its ASC partners where a main physician is designated as the surgery center's medical director and is involved with decision-making for the organization.
"In most scenarios, a medical director is a courtesy position — they're paid for those roles but it's not a role that typically has a lot of power," says Mr. Spitler. "In our model, the medical director is kind of like the chairman of the board — they actually have control."
