Illinois' Northwest Community Hospital Opposes Surgeon's Plan for ASC

A surgeon at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Ill., wants to open a $4 million outpatient surgery center, a proposal that is being opposed by hospital CEO Bruce Crowther, according to a letter submitted to the board and a Crain's Chicago Business report.

Yelena Levitin, MD, has proposed a 7,700-square-foot ambulatory surgery center would be located about four miles from the hospital, according to an application filed with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board. The surgery center would contain two operating rooms and six rooms for patient exams.

Dr. Levitin is on the medical staff at Northwest Community Hospital currently. She is contesting a peer review in an internal administrative proceeding, according to the report. Dr. Levitin said she saw an opportunity to open a lower-cost surgery center to increase accessibility for patients without the money to pay for hospital procedures. She declined to speak about the administrative proceeding with Northwest.

Dr. Levitin is the sole owner of Chicago Surgical Clinic Ltd., which has an office in Wheeling. Chicago Surgical expects to more than triple its operating profit to $1.7 million and increase its revenue to $7.3 million in the first full year after the new facility would be completed.

The Illinois Board will consider the project during its Dec. 10 meeting.
