Healthcare Realty Exec: 6 Reasons Outpatient Centers Will Thrive in 2012

James Ellis, CEO of Health Care Realty Development Company, discussed six reasons outpatient centers will grow in 2012 in a Healthcare Finance News report.

Mr. Ellis said outpatient centers are growing for six main reasons:

Reduced costs.
Outpatient clinics are less expensive to build than hospitals and have lower operating costs.

Reimbursement.
Outpatient centers charge insurers less money for procedures than hospitals. Many outpatient surgery center procedures are optional and therefore paid for by private insurance.

Access to care.
Outpatient centers are convenient and designed to be accessible to physicians and patients.

Staffing. Outpatient centers do not need multiple shifts of staff because they are not open on nights and weekends like hospitals.

Outpatient surgery.
Centers may experience a jump in volume over the next few years as the number of outpatient procedures is expected to increase as the baby boomers hit Medicare age.

Increased competition.
Hospitals are increasingly developing outpatient surgery centers as a way to market to physicians and patients.
