Connecticut hospital weighs investing in surgery center — 5 insights

Hospital of Central Connecticut wants to purchase a majority stake of the soon-to-open Rocky Hill Surgery Center, the Hartford Business Journal reports.

What you should know:

1. The New Britain, Conn.-based hospital would invest $399,000 into the Rocky Hill, Conn.-based surgery center for a 51 percent stake if the state Office of Health Strategy approves the deal.

2. The hospital said its investment would improve the quality, access and coordination of patient care as well as enhancing the center's financial position.

3. The surgery center will focus on ophthalmology.

4. The center used to be located in Middletown, Conn., and was branded under the Personal Choice Surgery Center moniker. The center used to be wholly owned by one surgeon, who then sought out additional independent investors.

5. Surgery center leadership expects the center to open this fall.
