ASC transactions surged in the third quarter of 2019, according to new research from Hammond Hanlon Camp.
Five insights:
1. There were 62 ASC and physician practice management transactions in the third quarter, compared with 37 in the second quarter of 2019.
2. The ASC and physician practice sector remains characterized by mergers and acquisitions involving just one or two facilities, but a number of established networks are growing.
3. However, year-to-date M&A activity for physician practices and ASCs was down about 12 percent compared to the same time last year.
"With a push toward outpatient procedures and new CMS reimbursement rates, ASCs will continue to be an attractive sector for investment and consolidation," H2C said.
4. Overall, healthcare M&A increased 12 percent from the second quarter and outpaced activity in the third quarter of 2018 by 41 percent.
5. This year, there were 214 healthcare transactions recorded in the third quarter, up from 191 in the second quarter. Health IT transactions, combined with strong volume for physician practices and ASCs, helped drive growth.
