74 hospitals and health systems with new ASCs in 2018

Seventy-four hospitals and health systems opened or announced plans for new ASCs in the past year.

Alabama

Opelika-based East Alabama Medical Center plans to open a freestanding emergency department with an ASC in Auburn, Ala. The ASC will have four operating and procedure rooms.

Athens, Ala.-based Athens-Limestone Hospital opened a surgery center.

Arizona

Tempe, Ariz.-based Atlantis Health System leased space in the Arrowhead Professional Medical Plaza in Glendale, Ariz., to develop an ASC.

California

Moreno Valley, Calif.-based Riverside University Health System plans to build a neighboring 200,000-square-foot ambulatory care campus with an outpatient surgery center.

Los Angeles-based Keck Medicine of University of Southern California opened the Norris Healthcare Center, also in Los Angeles.

Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Cottage Children's Medical Center opened a pediatric surgery center in Goleta, Calif.

Bakersfield, Calif.-based Rio Bravo Medical Center is developing four medical buildings to add to its campus. The campus currently has a 65,000-square-foot cancer and imaging center with an attached surgery center. By the end of 2019, the cancer and surgery center will double in size.

Los Angeles-based Good Samaritan Hospital opened the Frank R. Seaver Ambulatory Surgery Center Sept. 4 as part of the nearly 200,000-square-foot Good Samaritan medical pavilion.

Moreno Valley, Calif.-based Riverside University Health System held a "topping off" ceremony for its new 200,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center.

University of California San Diego Health's La Jolla, Calif.-based Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion opened. The four-story building features an ASC.

Colorado

Pueblo, Colo.-based Parkview Medical Center opened a new outpatient center that will be able to accommodate as many as 60 procedures per day.

Durango, Colo.-based Animas Surgical Hospital is planning a 73,125-square-foot expansion with an ASC to accommodate rapid growth.

Boulder (Colo.) Community Health is building a 30,000-square-foot medical office building next to its Community Medical Center in Lafayette, Colo. The health system planned to break ground on the office space by the end of the year, contingent on approval from the city of Lafayette.

Connecticut

Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health opened the Musculoskeletal Care McGivney Advanced Surgery Center in August on its Saint Raphael campus.

Hartford, Conn.-based St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Hartford-based Lighthouse Surgery Holdings are partnering to build the Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Center in Hartford.

Florida

United Surgical Partners International will open an ASC in West Palm Beach, Fla., in partnership with New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery.

Vero Beach, Fla.-based Indian River Medical Center opened the Scully Endoscopy Center.

Compass Surgical Partners and Stuart, Fla.-based Martin Health opened Stuart Surgery Center, a GI-focused ASC.

Construction on Orlando (Fla.) Health's new $42 million medical pavilion with an ASC in Lake Mary, Fla., is set to begin this fall.

Fleming Island, Fla.-based Baptist Clay Medical Center will open its surgery center in Fleming Island in late December.

Fort Myers, Fla.-based Lee Health plans to open its $140 million medical campus with an ASC in Estero, Fla.

Georgia

The Hospital Authority of Tift County began construction on a replacement facility for Adel, Ga.-based Cook Medical Center in March. The building will include an outpatient surgery center.

Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health broke ground on an outpatient surgery center May 1. The health system expects to complete the center by August 2019.

Atlanta-based Grady Health System filed a letter of intent to develop an ASC.

Illinois

New Lenox, Ill.-based Silver Cross Hospital opened a freestanding ASC in New Lenox through a joint venture with independent physicians and United Surgical Partners International.

Maryville, Ill.-based Anderson Healthcare plans to create a medical office campus with an ASC on a 10-acre plot of land in Edwardsville, Ill.

Indiana

Goshen (Ind.) Health opened a new outpatient surgery center focused on GI, orthopedics, sports medicine, pain management and general surgery.

Kansas

Andover-based Kansas Medical Center will build a 13,000-square-foot ASC to expand its outpatient surgical presence.

Louisiana

Baton Rouge (La.) General opened the Mid City Specialty Center in Baton Rouge, the first ASC in Mid City.

Maine

Portland-based Maine Medical Center won board approval to launch an expansion project in early May. The five-year expansion plan includes a new surgery center and an employee parking garage.

Maryland

A judge ruled in favor of Annapolis, Md.-based Anne Arundel Medical Center's bid to develop a cardiac surgery center.

Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System filed a plan to invest $50 million in a new medical center next to the Laurel (Md.) Regional Hospital. The new facility, UM Laurel Medical Center, will feature a surgery center, 24/7 emergency care, behavioral health resources and outpatient programs, such as wellness promotion.

Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Health System plans to open an ASC at Green Spring Station in Lutherville, Md.

Bel Air-based University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health is building an outpatient pavilion with a surgery center in Bel Air.

Massachusetts

Medford, Mass.-based Hallmark Health System plans to build an ASC, which will cost an estimated $16 million, at its Lawrence Memorial Hospital campus in Medford.

The Surgery Center at Shrewsbury (Mass.) opened May 24. The center is a joint venture between Worcester-based UMass Memorial Health Care, Brockton, Mass.-based Shields Healthcare Group and Auburn, Mass.-based Reliant Medical Group.

Minnesota

Willmar, Minn.-based Carris Health opened its $11 million outpatient surgery center in Willmar.

Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health is spending $800 million through its new Vision Northland project, which will transform its downtown presence. Essentia is planning to build an entirely new hospital, a clinical building and an outpatient surgery center.

Michigan

Wyoming, Mich.-based Metro Health finished building a new surgery center space.

Montana

Bozeman (Mont.) Health and United Surgical Partners International partnered to build a $20 million ASC in West Bozeman. Construction on the new ASC is expected to begin in 2019.

Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb.-based Bryan Medical Center opened its new medical building with a 17,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center, along with clinical and office space, in March.

Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Neb., is constructing a 130,000-square-foot medical office building, which will house an outpatient surgery center.

New Jersey

Flemington, N.J.-based Hunterdon Healthcare held a ribbon cutting ceremony June 14 for its new medical office space in Bridgewater, N.J. An ASC occupies 7,500 square feet on the third floor.

New York

Port Jefferson (N.Y.) Surgery Center held its grand opening ceremony May 12 after its initial opening in January. The center is a joint venture between 19 community surgeons, Port Jefferson-based Mather Hospital and Pinnacle III.

Roslyn, N.Y.-based St. Francis Hospital of Catholic Health Services of Long Island partnered with Regent Surgical Health to open the East Hills (N.Y.) Surgery Center.

Clifton Park, N.Y.-based Ellis Medicine received state approval for its $13.64 million, 40,000-square-foot surgical center.

Albany ENT & Allergy Services, St. Peter's Hospital and OrthoNY broke ground on a 54,000-square-foot medical office building and 22,000-square-foot multispecialty ASC in Colonie, N.Y. All three organizations are based in Albany, N.Y.

Ulster, N.Y.-based HealthQuest Medical Practice signed a lease to move into a vacant Macy's building to construct an $18 million ASC, urgent care center and oncology practice.

North Carolina

Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health sought approval for a 15,500-square-foot ASC with two operating rooms, a gastroenterology endoscopy room and a procedure room in Kernsersville, N.C., for $12.7 million.

Supply, N.C.-based Novant Health Brunswick Endoscopy Center opened May 2 as the first freestanding endoscopy center in Brunswick County.

Novant Health opened Center City Outpatient Surgery Center and welcomed the facility's first patients Aug. 27. Both are based in Charlotte, N.C.

Lenoir, N.C.-based Caldwell UNC Health Care and a group of eight surgeons are teaming up to build a $7.1 million orthopedic ASC in Granite Falls, N.C.

Mattoon, N.C.-based Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center is planning to build an 18,000-square-foot surgery center.

Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health's plans for a medical campus expansion in Western Cary, N.C., involve building a multispecialty ASC.

Ohio

Cincinnati-based Mercy Health began construction on the three-story Eastgate Medical Center, which will feature an ASC, in the eastern part of the city.

Oklahoma

Construction is underway on Oklahoma City-based McBride Orthopedic Hospital's new ASC.

Pennsylvania

Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health opened a surgery center in Cherry Hill, N.J. The ASC can accommodate an estimated 10,000 surgical procedures annually.

Conemaugh Health System held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 130,000-square-foot East Hills Outpatient Center Feb. 7. Both are based in Johnstown, Pa.

A five-story Penn Highlands DuBois West Wing annex is the first project in DuBois, Pa.-based Penn Highlands Healthcare's plan, and it will include a new ASC with its own recovery area, pre-and postsurgery area and operating rooms.

Cleveland Clinic opened its Coral Springs (Fla.) Family Health System, which features an outpatient surgery center as well as endoscopy suites, July 1.

West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health will expand its ASC network through a joint venture with United Surgical Partners International.

Work is advancing on York, Pa.-based WellSpan Health's 80,000-square-foot WellSpan Health and Surgery Center in Penn Township, Pa.

Allentown, Pa.-based Coordinated Health and Morristown, N.J.-based Atlantic Health System signed a definitive agreement to partner on an ASC.

South Carolina

Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina is opening an outpatient surgical facility in a shopping mall.

Tennessee

Murfreesboro, Tenn.-based Saint Thomas Health purchased 2.25 acres of land for $1.19 million to build its new outpatient surgery center.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center proposed the purchase of up to 14 acres of property for a new ASC and pediatric clinic in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Murfreesboro City Council voted to approve the property sale.

Knoxville, Tenn.-based Tennova Healthcare cut certain services at its Morristown, Tenn.-based Lakeway Regional Hospital while building an ASC on a North Knoxville, Tenn.-based medical campus. The center will include six operating suites and is expected to open in early 2019.

Tennessee's Health Services and Development Agency approved Nashville, Tenn.-based Saint Thomas Health's application to relocate its Madison, Tenn.-based joint venture ASC.

Texas

Dallas-based Children's Health opened Specialty Center 2, which includes the Live Oak Surgery Center, in Plano, Texas.

Washington

Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services began construction on a new ASC at its Portland, Ore.-based St. Vincent Medical Center campus in April. This will be Providence's fifth outpatient surgery center in the Portland area.

Wisconsin

Milwaukee-based Froedtert Hospital & the Medical College of Wisconsin opened a health center in Oak Creek, Wis. At 109,000 square feet, the Drexel Town Square Health Center contains an outpatient surgery center, cancer center, pharmacy and lab services.

Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care received approval from the Pleasant Prairie Plan Commission for its $130 million ASC and office building development in Pleasant Prairie, Wis.

Glendale-based Ascension Wisconsin plans to begin construction on an 83,000-square-foot medical center with an ASC by the end of the year.
