While not all device manufacturers authorize Amazon to distribute products, Amazon is frequently used by physicians to purchase supplies and devices, a CNBC report suggests.
Here's what you need to know:
1. A CNBC survey to participating physicians indicated 34 percent are using Amazon to purchase medical and dental supplies. As the online retail giant begins to creep into practices, dental and medical supply distributors are facing disruption.
2. Last week, market analyst Morgan Stanley announced Amazon is buying supplies directly from Dentsply Sirona and selling the oral goods manufacturer's products through third-party dealers. Amazon's introduction into dental distribution caused Henry Schein's stock to drop 5 percent immediately after Mr. Stanley's announcement. Henry Schein's share's have risen since the initial drop, but continue to remain volatile.
3. Although Amazon is buying and selling Dentsply Sirona products, Dentsply Sirona has not cleared Amazon as an authorized distributor, according to The Fly. And the report indicated Dentsply Sirona does not have plans to do business with Amazon in the immediate future.
4. Dentsply Sirona is not the only device and supply manufacturer with products being sold by Amazon. Physicians can purchase various equipment and supplies from Medtronic, Stryker and Biolase with a simple Amazon search.
