3 disruptors scooping up physicians

Here are three disruptors that have made strides in the consolidation of physicians in the last year:

CVS Health

In May, CVS Health completed its $10.6 billion acquisition of primary care company Oak Street Health. The deal gave CVS access to the Chicago-based company's value-based primary care network with more than 160 clinics in 21 states that focus on Medicare beneficiaries. Under the deal, Oak Street Health is operating as a multipayer primary care provider as part of CVS Health.

In March, CVS Health completed its $8 billion acquisition of Signify Health, adding more than 10,000 clinicians to its network.

The company also offers virtual primary care, team-based primary care from Aetna and retail primary care at MinuteClinic.

In a Sept. 18 blog post, Sree Chaguturu, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer of CVS Health, said the company plans to "move the needle on preventive care" by continuing to expand primary healthcare and using analytics and technology to reach patients where they are.

Amazon

In February, Amazon completed its $3.9 billion acquisition of virtual and in-person primary care company One Medical. The acquisition gave Amazon access to more than 200 brick-and-mortar physicians offices, along with roughly 815,000 One Medical members.

One Medical provides virtual and in-person care at more than 125 offices nationwide.

"Customers want and deserve better, and that's what One Medical has been working and innovating on for the last decade," Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, said in a news release. "Together, we believe we can make the healthcare experience easier, faster, more personal and more convenient for everyone."

Optum

Optum, parent company of SCA Health, is the country's largest employer of physicians with 70,000 employed or aligned physicians nationally.

In the last year, Optum acquired home health and hospice provider Amedisys and Middletown, N.Y.-based multispecialty group Crystal Run Healthcare. Additionally, LHC Group's 29,000 employees will join Optum as part of UnitedHealth Group's $5.4 billion acquisition of the home health and hospice company.
