Hospitals acquired 8,000 medical practices between July 2016 and January 2018, according to data from Avalere Health and the Physicians Advocacy Institute, and 2019 is shaping up to be another active year for transactions.
Eleven hospital-practice alignments and acquisitions that have transpired so far this year:
Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center absorbed The Vascular Group wholly. The Vascular Group, which was previously an Albany Med affiliate, was renamed Albany Med Vascular Surgery.
Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health decided to absorb North Carolina Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat's five locations. Effective April 1, NCEENT aligned with Duke's ophthalmology and surgery departments, as well as Duke's physician practice, the Private Diagnostic Clinic.
King of Prussia, Pa.-based The Physicians Integrated Network joined West Reading, Pa.-based Tower Health's multispecialty physicians network. TPIN operates 30 ambulatory facilities.
Kokomo Surgical Group joined the 1,000-member provider group Community Physician Network, which is employed by Community Health Network. All are based in Kokomo, Ind.
Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital plans to consolidate six surgical teams: Orthopedic Specialists of Glens Falls; Watertown, N.Y.-based North Country Orthopedics; Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital; Queensbury, N.Y.-based Baywood Surgical; Glens Falls-based Adirondack Urology and Glens Falls-based Center for Lung and Chest Surgery. They will combine to form Surgical Specialists of Glens Falls Hospital.
TriHealth entered into a development agreement with Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine to create an orthopedic hospital. TriHealth and Beacon, both based in Cincinnati, will convert TriHealth's Evendale (Ohio) Hospital into an orthopedics-only facility.
Los Angeles-based Pipeline Health expanded into the Texas market by acquiring 22 freestanding emergency rooms. Pipeline Health will own the ERs in partnership with Lewisville, Texas-based Adeptus Health.
New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System's investment arm is taking a minority stake in a planned multispecialty ASC.
Topeka, Kan.-based St. Francis Campus, a member of the University of Kansas Health System, purchased Tallgrass Surgical Center in Topeka.
Effective Jan. 1, O'Fallon, Mo.-based Mercy Clinic acquired Oklahoma City-based Orthopedic Associates and its on-campus ASC, renaming it Mercy Clinic Orthopedic Associates. The practice joined Mercy's larger provider network. Mercy also acquired a surgery center.
Willmar, Minn.-based Carris Health entered into a professional services agreement with Willmar-based Family Practice Medical Center.
